Baronet Press: A New Publisher for Spanking and Erotica

The awesome Casey McKay is here to talk about her latest venture…not a new book but a new publishing company, Baronet Press.

Casey has bravely agreed to answer my questions.

Celeste Jones: Casey, what made you decide to start your own publishing company?

Casey McKay: It actually wasn't something I intended to do. I started writing first and my husband helped me get my first book up. We fell into a pattern of me writing and him formatting and making my covers. We both have a hand at promoting them and it became a joint effort publishing my books. My husband worked for a long time in the music industry marketing and promoting and he draws a lot of similarities between the two, so a lot of it is like second nature to him. We have a pretty diverse background and skill set that when meshed together seems to work really well for this sort of thing.

Celeste Jones: There are already several publishing companies that specialize in spanking/DD books. What sets Baronet apart?

Casey McKay: I honestly think it's everything that has led us up to this point. Like I said my husband has been doing this sort of thing since his teens, it was just with music not with erotica. He comes from a music industry perspective and I studied film in college. It's not your typical path to publishing books but I feel like it only helps us.

Celeste Jones: Will Baronet be publishing non-spanking books?

Casey McKay: Absolutely! There is a lot of erotica out there to be published. We are open to any and all kinds. Obviously I started out as a spanking romance author, who knows if that's what I will always continue to write? It's not the only thing I read and it is not the only thing we publish. Our aim is to publish quality erotic romance. Give the people what they want I say!

Celeste Jones: I understand that you and Mr. McKay are running this new business together. How's that going?  What have you learned about yourself while working with your husband?

Casey McKay: I think it's going well. I don't know what he would say, hopefully the same! I feel like it's something we've been doing all along, even before we decided to make it legit we were putting out my books and bouncing ideas off of each other. In a way I feel more comfortable working with him than anyone else- sometimes I think some of my ideas are really dumb and if I were working with someone I was trying to impress I would probably censor myself more. I think the number one thing I have learned about myself is that I am way more business minded than I ever thought I was, I always thought of myself as more of a creative type, it was a surprising revelation.

Celeste Jones: What's been the biggest surprise for you as a publisher?

Casey McKay: Being an author I am always a mess the week my book releases. I am biting my nails, watching the rankings, and waiting for reviews to come in. Switching over to publishing I anticipated it to be more low key. I thought I wouldn't be as invested because it wasn't something I had actually written. But it turns out I am just as invested if not more. I find myself stalking rankings and checking for reviews more frequently.

Celeste Jones: Many people have stories tucked away on their hard drives that they are afraid to send to a publisher. Any suggestions for those folks?

Casey McKay: Just take the plunge! What do you have to lose? Especially now with the internet and pen names you don't even have to leave your home, no one will even know it's you. It can be one of the hardest things to share something you have created but I think even having one person get enjoyment out of it can be 100 times more rewarding than enjoying it alone.

Celeste Jones: More and more established authors are moving toward self-publishing. What does Baronet Press offer that an author cannot get for themselves?

Casey McKay: I think it can be deceiving how much work self publishing is. It takes up a lot of time and there always seems to be something you didn't think of. I'm not saying it can't be done- obviously it can be, but we're hopefully offering authors a better option: a lot of the freedom you would have when self publishing, but none of the headache of trying to do it yourself. We know it's a chance to take publishing with a company that is just starting out- that's why we are so appreciative to Darling Adams (aka Renee Rose), Aubrey Cara, and Natasha Knight for putting out books with us. We couldn't have asked for better authors to start with!

Celeste Jones: If someone is interested in publishing with Baronet Press, what should they do?

Casey McKay: Email us! baronetpress@gmail.com We're on facebook and twitter too, any questions, submissions, whatever- we'd love to hear from you! Or click here to go to our website.

  1. Yay Casey! I've worked with and met both Mr. and Mrs. McKay (it seems weird to call you that Casey) and they're awesome. You do work well together, and you do a nice job. I wish Baronet Press tons of success and I think they can do it.

  2. Good for you, Casey! I'm glad you've created another publishing option for authors of spanking fiction. And I'm happy to see an author taking a business approach to writing.

Who handles the editing for Baronet Press? Do you do it or do you contract it out? Are there any types of spanking fiction or erotica you wouldn't publish? Have you had to turn down any manuscripts yet?

    2. Hi, Cara! Those are good questions. Right now I am editing for us, but that will probably change as we grow. We have not had to turn anything down yet and I would have to say the only thing we would be opposed to publishing are illegal acts that might get us flagged on Amazon. The most sales come from there and we wouldn't want to jeopardize our whole account for something like that.
