Talking Romance

As you know from Monday's post, I'm participating in a romance blog hop this weekend (with prizes!) If you haven't read Monday's post, be sure you do to get all the details.

So, to get warmed up for all that romance this weekend, let's talk about romantic movies.

Here's the topic: what's your favorite romantic scene from a movie (or book)? And, what made it so romantic?

I'm going with The Sound of Music (stop groaning!) and my favorite scene is when Maria is dancing with the children on the patio during the big party and the Captain comes out and dances with her.

Why is this so romantic? First, Christopher Plummer. Very sexy as the Captain. He was so austere, but with a twinkle in his eye. Second, I love the formality of his putting on his gloves. And finally, dancing is just plain romantic. Slow dancing (even though I always try to lead) is the most romantic thing, I think. If you don't believe me, put on some music, grab your sweetie, and take a couple slow spins around the room.

What about the rest of you? Is there something more current that can out-do The Sounds of Music for romance?

Make your case!

  1. My favorite romantic scene is from An Officer and A Gentleman, when Richard Gere comes back for Debra Winger and he sweeps her up in his arms and carries her off the factory floor. That he came back, and that he carries her off is what makes it so sexy. I've always found a man carrying a woman very sexy.

    1. I love that scene too. When he's walking through the factory and the music builds and everyone knows where he's going....sigh.

Plus, I think we all want to believe that the good girl will get the prince in the end (so to speak).

  2. I can not just pick one!(You can see how I follow rules) I love Philadelphia story, She's reluctantly still in love,he's persistent. Casablanca, of course the last farewell scene. Gone with the wind, when Rhett carries Scarlett up the stairs.Love Story. (anyone remember that) I could go on....the old cheesie westerns. Anything with Cary Grant. I haven't even reached modern movies. The Notebook -sigh. There are so many books, I would never be able to pick just one. Wuthering Heights, Little Women, How Green Was MY Valley....I will stop before I write a book.

    1. Even if you just watch that clip on YouTube (I assume it's there) w/o watching the whole movie, you get the romance.

    1. I just read your post. So romantic and better than the movies because you lived it.

  5. It's so hard to choose. I love the scene in It's a Wonderful Life when Mary (Donna Reed) and George (Jimmy Stewart) are sharing the phone (because her mother was on the extension). Their faces are so close together, and you can see how hard it is for her to talk to their old school friend, and you know how much she wants him, and how torn he is, but how much he feels for her.

I also love one of the sex scenes in the Big Easy. I can't remember the character names, but Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin are in bed together for the first time, and she says something like she hasn't been lucky with sex and he says her luck is about to change. Hot!

Then there's that scene in Bridget Jones where-- Okay, I'll stop.

I agree with that Captain Von Trapp and Maria dancing scene, Celeste!

    1. Thanks. When I told my husband my ideas for romantic movies he told me I needed something more current, but since I don't watch many movies, I couldn't think of any, so I'm glad to get some other suggestions of older movies and agreement about Maria and The Captain.

      Oh....and what about Dirty Dancing?
