We Can Do It! Jade Cary's Secrets To Productivity

I'm happy to have Jade Cary here today to share a bit about her writing life with us. Welcome Jade!

Celeste Jones: Are you a full time or part time writer?

 Jade Cary: Part Time

Celeste Jones:  What other responsibilities do you have to juggle along with writing? Children? Aging parents? Exercise? A disturbing number of pets? Critiquing for other writers?

Jade Cary  I’m married with two kids, one college age and one in middle school. They both play baseball and when we’re not at a weekend tournament for the younger one, we’re watching the older one at college out of state. All of that and just keeping up with family, trying not to neglect myself or friends, and that leaves little time for writing.

Celeste Jones: Do you have a set schedule for when you write? If so, what is it?

Jade Cary:  I try to write from 8-3pm when I don’t have scheduled appointments (three times a week) that interrupt the flow. I tend not to begin if I know I’ll have frequent interruptions.

Celeste Jones: Do you have particular productivity goals for each day or week or just go for it?

Jade Cary:  I go for it, and I’m grateful for every word I get out of myself. I find that pressuring myself to do a set amount is counterproductive.

Celeste Jones: What is a typical day (if such a thing exists) like for you?

Jade Cary: Wake at 6, make breakfast for my son(s), take the younger one to school, go to the gym or walk, see personal trainer (3 times a week). On days when I don’t see the trainer I sit and write. Once my younger one gets home I generally don’t write anymore, but instead do things that don’t require as much concentration, like catch up on emails or phone calls. Make dinner, spend time with kids and The Ol Man, then get the little one to bed. Whew.

Celeste Jones:  Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?

Jade Cary:  Yes, I often do.

Celeste Jones: Do you use any special writing programs like Write or Die?

Jade Cary:  No. Don’t need the pressure.

Celeste Jones: What about promotion? Do you have particular time when you visit blogs or use other social media? How do you monitor your time?

Jade Cary:  I get on Facebook every day and mostly read, and I do some promoting. I don’t like it and I’m not particularly good at it.

Celeste Jones: What about your blog? Do you have a set schedule  or just blog when the mood strikes you?

Jade Cary:  I blog when I have something interesting to say, hence the echo.

Celeste Jones: What tips or pointers do you have to share to help others be more productive?

Jade Cary: Do what you can and don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s supposed to be fun and it should not land you in divorce court. Pay attention to the important things while you write the next great novel. You can do both, and do it well, just perhaps not on another’s timetable. Acknowledge that and be strong in your priorities.

Celeste Jones: What books are you working on now? What are your goals for 2014?

Jade Cary:  I am working on the sequel to The Point of it All, and I am going to start the third book in a series I’m writing under another name. I might also spiff up one I’ve been working on and get that out.

Celeste Jones: Anything else you’d like to share?

Jade Cary: Unless this writing gig is putting food on the table for you and your family, don’t stress. Have fun with it but don’t lose sight of life.

This is the city.

Murder and violence is all in a day’s work for Lieutenant Vincent Girardi. But there is something about this murder that doesn’t add up. When a piece of paper with an address written on it is found at the crime scene, Vince believes that perhaps this victim wasn’t the intended target.

Dr. Rowan Delaney is biding her time. In less than a week she will give testimony that will rid her of a painful past once and for all, and grant her and her two children the freedom she has been seeking for years. When Lieutenant Vincent Girardi and his partner show up at her door to question her about the murdered woman across the street, and then suggest that she may have been the intended target, she refuses all help or protection, intending to fulfill her obligation in front of the Grand Jury without interference from anyone—including the handsome cop darkening her doorstep.

But the Lieutenant has other plans. He is convinced the pretty doctor was the intended victim, and he is determined to find out why, starting with Rowan’s absentee husband, head of a notorious drug cartel. Vince is determined to see the woman and her children safe; Rowan is determined to start her life over—after her testimony.

Can Vince protect her without his feelings for her getting in the way? And can Rowan accept his care, along with a heavy dose of hubris and alpha dominance, without losing herself in the process?

And will their growing love be enough to save them from the evil that will not take no for an answer?

The Barn by Alta Hensley

A Time to Heal by Sue Lyndon
Stephie’s cancer went into remission a year ago, but her husband, Marcus, still treats her like she’s breakable. They resume practicing domestic discipline, but Marcus has a hard time following through with punishments, leaving Stephie frustrated that it’s not the same as before her illness. Can they move past the fears that have built up between them to find the intimacy they lost?

Unmet Desire by Renee Rose
Watching his wife unravel as she faces infertility is as heartbreaking for Luis as it is for Claire, but the more he compassion he shows, the more she drifts away. Deciding to take a firm hand, he whisks her away to their mountain condo for a weekend boot camp to reaffirm their roles and reignite their passion for one another.

We Can Do It! Jaye Peaches Shows Us How To Get More Done

Please welcome Jaye Peaches to the continuing discussion of productivity.

Celeste Jones: Are you a full time or part time writer?

Jaye:  full-time

Celeste Jones:  What other responsibilities do you have to juggle along with writing? Children? Aging parents? Exercise? A disturbing number of pets? Critiquing for other writers?

Jaye: kids (5&9) and volunteering locally takes up a few hours each week.

Celeste Jones: Do you have a set schedule for when you write? If so, what is it?

Jaye: School hours and evenings, except when I’m shopping, running errands….

Celeste Jones: Do you have particular productivity goals for each day or week or just go for it?

Jaye: No short term goals.  I’ve always switched between tasks. A legacy of my previous career. I like to have several things on the go at once – including non-erotica work which is done openly under my real name and is something that I share with family and friends.  I have long term goals, ie Q2 these 2 books will be published.

Celeste Jones: What is a typical day (if such a thing exists) like for you?

Jaye:  Drink tea. Then catch up on blogs – I have a personal anon blog.  If I’m in a creative mood I write, if I feel unimaginative I edit an existing book. When I’m in full flow I hate to be interrupted which is hard when it coincides with picking kids up from school etc.  I have music on too, especially classical then I don’t get distracted by lyrics.

Celeste Jones:  Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?

Jaye:  Yes. Always. They feed off each other. Something I write in one will fire up ideas in another. This is even true of my non-erotic work, even though the genre is different.

Celeste Jones: Do you use any special writing programs like Write or Die?

Jaye: Word. I would be interested to know about specialist software from other authors.

Celeste Jones: What about promotion? Do you have particular time when you visit blogs or use other social media? How do you monitor your time?

Jaye:  I’m weak here as I’m new to promoting. I would like to schedule my time better on this and learn how to engage with readers as well as other writers.  I’m not a marketing person and don’t like drawing attention to myself. My books, yes, me the author, no.

Celeste Jones: What about your blog? Do you have a set schedule  or just blog when the mood strikes you?

Jaye:  If it is a blog hop I will work to the deadline. At the moment it is by mood and I might write several posts in one day and schedule them over the coming weeks.

Celeste Jones: What tips or pointers do you have to share to help others be more productive?

Jaye: Creativity comes at the strangest moments.  I compose music too and often I compose when I’m sad, but write when I’m happy.  Don’t judge productivity by output. A few hundred well written words are worth far more than a few thousand rubbish ones. My muse packs up sometimes and getting going again might mean doing something completely different.  Go for a walk, bake, research some background for a plot.   Don’t compare to others.  Writing is a fluid process.

Celeste Jones: What books are you working on now? What are your goals for 2014?

Jaye: I’ve just submitted one to a publisher. Another is half written and another is in outline. 7 are in draft for self-publishing.  I have short stories written that could be turned into books.  I also have one vanilla book which is my main goal for the year.  This one will take priority second half of the year.

Celeste Jones: Anything else you’d like to share?

Jaye: I have a private blog where I write ideas for my vanilla book. I share this with a few friends/family. It is like having beta readers as you go. Each post is a snippet rather than trying to write chronologically. Eventually I stick them together and edit into chapters. It has really helped plan the book and see where I want to take the characters.

We Can Do It! Thianna D Shares Her Secrets To Productivity

Thianna D is here to share her secrets to being an extremely productive writer. A quick peek at her Amazon Author Page is a testament to her productivity. Looks like at least 15 books.

Let's find out how she does it....

Celeste Jones: Are you a full time or part time writer?

Thianna D: I'm a full-time writer. Oh, that is a wonderful thing to say. Been dreaming about it my entire life.

Celeste Jones:  What other responsibilities do you have to juggle along with writing? Children? Aging parents? Exercise? A disturbing number of pets? Critiquing for other writers?

Thianna D: None of us live in a vacuum, so we all have something. I do have elderly parents I help with. Also, I go to the gym twice a day. In the morning, it isn't so bad, but in the afternoon, I have to take a break from writing and that usually makes me growl. But the responsibilities that to me are the most likely to get in the way of my writing are the editing, marketing, social networking side of author life. I look forward to hiring an assistant to do some of that.

Celeste Jones: Do you have a set schedule for when you write? If so, what is it?

Thianna D: A set schedule? Only when I want to be really prolific. This last fall was rife with edits after edits from several different manuscripts and I lost the writing bug for a while. Total burnout. Now that characters are talking again, I will start setting times to write. I always found 1-5 pm a great time. Now with the gym being right in the middle of that, I will have to change it.

Celeste Jones: Do you have particular productivity goals for each day or week or just go for it?

Thianna D: I only set goals during JulNoWriMo. This last summer, I ended up with 206,000 words written for the month of July. But usually, for me, it is a time limit. So, if I have only 2 hours to write and I buckle down to do it, I can get 5,000-6,000 words written in that timeframe. My average writing speed is 2500 words/hour.

Celeste Jones: What is a typical day (if such a thing exists) like for you?

Thianna D: I have typical mornings, but the rest of the day? Not so much. Mornings are filled with marketing, email reading, social networking, and yes the gym. (No matter what, I get to the gym.)

Celeste Jones:  Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?

Thianna D: For the most part yes. I have over 500 WIPs. Most of them will never be finished works. About 20 will. When my characters stop talking to me, I like having another story to go to. Plus, since I write several different genres, it is rare for me to want to stay with one consistently. That was one of the great things about JulNoWriMo. Because of the intensity, it kept me on track and I wrote a 120k word story from start to finish in a matter of 2.5 weeks. I've heard they have a NoWriMo in March and I will be participating as I love what comes out of it.

Celeste Jones: Do you use any special writing programs like Write or Die?

Thianna D: Absolutely not. I write hard and fast. And I always push myself when I write. Why use a program that uses negative reinforcement to up my game? I believe in positive reinforcement. Write for an hour? Then do 100 jumping jacks! Now that is my kind of hurrah.

Celeste Jones: What about promotion? Do you have particular time when you visit blogs or use other social media? How do you monitor your time?

Thianna D: For me, that is all mornings. Unless I am in book release mode at which point it becomes an all-day event for several weeks. As for monitoring time, as long as I spend only a small amount on social networks, I'm good. But SNs are the biggest time wasters. As long as I can only go there in the morning and the evening, I can get a lot done.

Celeste Jones: What about your blog? Do you have a set schedule  or just blog when the mood strikes you?

Thianna D: I do love posting every day, but find that only a couple times a year is that plausible. So I try 3-4 times a week now. When I can, I prefer to set up my posts up to 4 weeks in advance so that I just don't have to think about it.

Celeste Jones: What tips or pointers do you have to share to help others be more productive?

Thianna D: First? Only visit social networks like Facebook & Twitter one time a day. And force yourself to stay no longer than 30 minutes. Then walk away until tomorrow. Second? Find another author and have writing events. "Today we will write from 1-3 pm. On your marks, get set, go!" and then see how much everyone wrote. I used to think I wasn't competitive. Turns out? I am. I will always push myself to write faster during those.

Celeste Jones: What books are you working on now? What are your goals for 2014?

Thianna D: So many books! Lol I'm working to finalize the All They Ever Needed series. There is my Corbin's Bend novella Finding Their Bliss that I am tweaking. I am also writing two young adult series and a non-erotic dating service novel. And that is beside all the vignettes I am writing.

Celeste Jones: Anything else you’d like to share?

Thianna D: I think for every author, there is an entirely different system. To be a writer, what you need is the passion and the drive to write. Don't let anything else get in the way of that dream. Write, write, write. And if you want to be a good writer? Writer harder. Don't let anyone else tell you that you can't write. If writing is inside of you? Write!

#SatSpanks From Lady Katherine's Conundrum

I've been absent from Sat Spanks for a few weeks and I'm glad to be back!

Here's a snippet from my latest release, Lady Katherine's Conundrum

The brush returns....

He continued to roll the peak between his thumb and forefinger while stroking its twin with the brush. Katherine fisted her hands against her thighs and bit her lip to keep from crying out at the exquisite pleasure he gave her.
Once he finished scrubbing her right nipple, he switched the brush to his left hand and repeated the process there. Katherine’s pussy pulsed with heat that emanated from front to back.  She clenched her legs together in order to keep from swaying. Her eyes closed in delirium and she wondered how much longer she could last against this sensual onslaught from her husband.
Two rapid slaps of the brush, one to each breast, brought her from her delirium. Her body was rife with sensations. A stinging bottom, a sopping pussy, and tits that had been scrubbed, tugged and slapped. How much more could she take?

Blurb: She's back and she's in trouble.

After a summer in the country Lady Katherine and her husband, Thomas, return to London to participate in all the festivities available to a Lord and his Lady. The scandal that forced them to marry is long forgotten and they are at the top of the social ladder.

In addition to the pleasures of an active social life, Lady Katherine is thrilled to learn that the friend who abandoned her in her time of need, Lady Lorena Arnold, is now the subject of a salacious scandal. Katherine can hardly believe her good fortune when she observes Lady Arnold en route to a tryst. But, before she can share the juicy tidbit with the other ladies of the ton, her husband lays down the law: No Gossip.
Will Katherine be able to keep her tale to herself? And if not, will her tail be at risk of a brisk spanking from the stern but loving Lord Winchester?

Spanking Stories Book Club---Swept Off Her Feet by Dinah McLeod

Please welcome Maddie Taylor who is here today to talk about Swept Off Her Feet by Dinah McLeod.

Blurb for Swept Off Her Feet
Twenty-nine years old and still without a husband, Maggie Swift does her best to be happy living on the family ranch. Now that her brothers are both married, however, she cannot help but feel she is being pushed out of her own home by her sisters-in-law… especially Libby. Her brother does his best to keep his bride in line—often with a firm hand applied to her bare bottom—but Maggie cannot seem to reconcile with the beautiful, feisty shopkeepers-daughter.

She has all but resigned herself to miserable spinsterhood, until an absentminded stroll through town leaves her standing unexpectedly in front of a rough-looking saloon. It is there that she is confronted and scolded by the imposing, ruggedly-handsome Clayborn Callahan. Offered a ride with him, Maggie accepts, promising that she will not be missed for a few hours though she knows her brothers will be worried sick.

When her lie is found out, Maggie discovers that her new suitor is more than ready to take her out back and make her cut a switch. In spite of her sore bottom, Maggie feels something for Clayborn that she has never felt for any man, and she is excited when he asks to come calling again. She wonders, though, if she can be the well-behaved woman he expects, or whether she will find herself over his knee more often than her pride and her tender bottom can handle.

Discussion by Maddie Taylor:
I enjoyed Swept Off Her Feet very much.  It appealed to me as a western, which I love, portraying traditional family values and male/female roles.  The men were strong and took care of the women they loved, the old-fashioned way.  I sympathized with the lead character Maggie.  She lost her mother, and then her oldest brother took a wife.  The new bride moves into the only home Maggie has ever known, and although it is not her sister-in-laws fault, resents having to change and share with the other woman.  Of course, she is grieving, not only for her mother but also the loss of her defined role in the family.  Next thing she knows, her other brother takes a wife.  She feels pushed aside even more—poor dear.  Of course, she doesn’t always handle it appropriately and at one point runs off unescorted—a no-no for a western woman in 1880.
Along comes Clay, thank goodness.  He is a bright star in her day, except that like her brothers, he takes her to task for her behavior—all with her eldest brother’s blessing.  So starts a whirlwind courtship, which Maggie had believed would never come to be.

Questions:

1.       In the Swift Family, the man is definitely the head of the household.  He can discipline his spouse without question as well as the other members of the family, including an adult sister.  Considering the era, how do you feel about the brother/sister spanking issue?
2.       The old west provides unmarried women with very few options other than living with family, or her spouse, career opportunities being extremely limited.  She feels trapped.  What would you have done if you were in Maggie’s position?
3.       Clay, although a friend of their deceased father, is a virtual stranger to Maggie.  When he finds her in town unescorted, he brings her home and sparks fly.  He asks and is allowed to punish Maggie for her transgression.  Do you agree with her brother’s decision to allow this?  Was this realistic?  Why?
4.       Without being a spoiler, Maggie receives a severe chastisement on a special day.  It was a time of excitement, which can often be quite stressful as well.  In general, do you feel the severity of discipline in spanking fiction is just enough, too much, or not enough?  Why?  Have you ever had a spanking on a special day?   Tell us what happened and how you got through the day with a sore bottom.

We Can Do It! Jolynn Raymond Shares Her Secrets to Productivity

It’s a new year and I am determined to become more productive, so I thought I’d get some advice from the experts…my writing friends.
Over the next two to three weeks, I'll be sharing their responses to a questionnaire that I created to probe all their secrets.

I hope we can all learn something from each other and maybe get to know a few new writers as well.

First up, I is Jolynn Raymond.

Celeste Jones: Are you a full time or part time writer?

Jolynn Raymond: Part Time

Celeste Jones:  What other responsibilities do you have to juggle along with writing? Children? Aging parents? Exercise? A disturbing number of pets? Critiquing for other writers?

Jolynn Raymond: I hold a full time job that often has enough work for me to go in at 6:30 and work at home in the evenings, weekends and sometimes enough stuff for my wife to do for me. My wife cares for our fur kids. We have two granddaughters who we see a few times a month and two grown sons (stepsons), my mom is 87 and very feisty. She keeps all of us on our toes. I also have a seizure disorder that can be triggered by stress and exhaustion issues plus menopause wheeeee!

Celeste Jones: Do you have a set schedule for when you write? If so, what is it?

Jolynn Raymond: I do my best to write on the weekends. I can’t write after a day of work. My job is very tiring. I’m active and on my feet all day. I feel like I’m two people sometimes, an author and woman who writes romance and kink and lives a kinky lifestyle, and the other me who is secretive about my wife when it comes to work. I hate being stifled but I have to.

Celeste Jones: Do you have particular productivity goals for each day or week or just go for it?

Jolynn Raymond: I just go for it. I try to write every weekend but don’t force it. Sometimes it’s crazy to do my weekly blog kink post and then try to writer a chapter of the new book. I promised myself I wouldn’t force things. I never want to hate writing or have it feel like a job. Muse speaks I write. I often talk out loud with dialog and daydream in the soaking tub after work to channel ideas.

Celeste Jones: What is a typical day (if such a thing exists) like for you?

Jolynn Raymond: I get up at 4:45 a.m. sit and drink coffee, get ready to work to leave by 6:00. My wife Kathy often drives because I have neurological issues that cause exhaustion and vision issues. I have a very active never sit down job where I grab maybe a 15 min. lunch to just sit. I get home around 4:00, check books sales, answer emails, and usually eat dinner early. Kathy does all the cooking, she is a housewife. I take a long hot bath for a good hour and read, or doze and daydream. Reading and soaking for an hour is my stress release. After my bath I do any paperwork that needs doing and try to have time to sit with Kathy and talk or watch TV, bed by 9:00.

Celeste Jones:  Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?

Jolynn RaymondNope, one story to focus on at a time. Muse may whisper other stuff and I have had writer’s block so bad that I let the book go for a time and went with what was pulling me. Never more than one at a time. I have to get so far into the setting of the book in my head that it would be impossible to do more than one story.

Celeste Jones: Do you use any special writing programs like Write or Die?

Jolynn Raymond: No, never heard of it.

Celeste Jones: What about promotion? Do you have particular time when you visit blogs or use other social media? How do you monitor your time?

Jolynn Raymond: My wife is my promotion person because honestly, I don’t have time. I usually choose where I want to run ads and create the ads, but she is the social media person. I have a blog where I post book stuff as well as write an informational BDSM post every weekend. It’s called Jolynn Raymond’s Dark Obsessions.

Celeste Jones: What about your blog? Do you have a set schedule or just blog when the mood strikes you?

Jolynn Raymond: See answer above.

Celeste Jones: What tips or pointers do you have to share to help others be more productive?

Jolynn Raymond:
  •  Find an activity that really allows you to clear your mind. I have to stop the static in my head in order for Muse to speak.
  •        Find your fan base and target them.
  •        Not everyone is going to like everything you write. Take the reviews that aren’t great in stride.
  •        Appreciate your readers. They pay the mortgage and allow my creative spirit to feel free. If my writing wasn’t helping my family I would feel bad about the time I spent doing it.
  •        If Muse speaks, listen. It may take you in a new direction but that’s okay.

Celeste Jones: What books are you working on now? What are your goals for 2014?

Jolynn Raymond: I’m writing a new kinky historical romance called “His Lordship’s Wayward Wife.”  In 2014 I want to finish the Connelly witch series or at least expand on it. My Beneath the Shadows of Evil Trilogy and the Connelly Witch book are very dear to my heart. Shadows was a huge undertaking that took years. It’s a very, very, long story.

Celeste Jones: Anything else you’d like to share?

Jolynn Raymond: I am thrilled beyond belief that I have such devoted fans and that I can call myself an author. People buy my books and want to step into my world and that is a very wonderful feeling. If it weren’t for my wife, I would have no social media. She does all the hard work with that stuff.

Latest release is a non-fiction book called:

Taken in Hand - A guide to Domestic Discipline, Power Exchange Relationships and BDSM Topics
Jolynn Raymond has written a book that shares the details of her own long lasting domestic discipline marriage and her experience surrounding power exchange relationships. It explains why these unconventional relationships work so well for so many couples. The book is an in-depth tutorial that takes the relationship past the simple act of discipline, to building a rock solid foundation that will ultimately create a deep bond of trust and love between those involved.

Taken In Hand will guide those interested in adding consensual domestic discipline, dominance and submission, and structure to their own relationship through the initial steps of communication, understanding and discovering both partner’s needs, creating mutual and realistic expectations, rules, and consequences, to the inevitable first spanking.

Taken In Hand will prove useful to those just starting out, as well as to those with some experience, as Ms. Raymond outlines the pitfalls, difficulties, and successes she has encountered in her own marriage. She also emphasizes the importance of consent, and pays special attention to the fine line between discipline and abuse.

The last part of the book examines the styles and types of spanking, gives an anal sex tutorial, talks about the responsibilities or being a dominant and gives tips for the submissive partner. Whether you need insight into BDSM as it relates to relationships or are trying to build a domestic discipline marriage from scratch, Taken In Hand will prove to be a comprehensive and practical guide.

My Thoughts On The Girl With The Thistle Tattoo

Patricia Green's The Girl With The Thistle Tattoo tells the story of thirtysomething former lawyer Cal, and twenty three year old Astraea who is a barrsta/model.

This is a story that I think will stay with me for a long time.

Astraea is a unique heroine. Far from innocent, she has been on her own for five years, though in many ways she has been emotionally on her own much longer.

Cover: The Girl with the Thistle TattooShe's a rebel in that "I'll show you that I don't care that you hurt me" sort of way that breaks your heart because her pain and struggle are as evident as the blue streak in her hair, though she thinks she's fooling everyone.

Astraea is a young woman who has used and been used. She puts on a brave face of sexual bravado to mask the icky feelings of her promiscuity.

She meets Cal at the coffee shop where she works and invites him on a "f*ck date" within minutes of their first hello. In addition to her beauty, Cal sees the hurt girl beneath the piercings and potty mouth.

I think all of us know or have known an Astraea: a person determined not to need anyone, impulsive, defiant and usually their own worst enemy.

Through discipline and love, Cal shows Astraea that she is not the unloveable screw up that she has come to consider herself.

Cal's discipline, reliability and affection have a positive affect on Astraea. At the same time, her free spirited nature and vulnerability touch a place in Cal that needed to be touched. (No, not that place, though the sex is H O T).

This isn't your typical twenty three year old spoiled brat heroine and this story covers some gritty territory. Give it a try. You won't be sorry.

Get reading! We are going to be discussing this book at Spanking Stories Book Club on Friday, January 24.

Why I Stopped Writing Amazon Reviews

Writers and publishers do all sorts of things to generate Amazon reviews.

I like getting reviews, particularly the nice 5 star ones that boost my ego and make my day.

I know many authors who are friends and colleagues of mine would appreciate a review.

So, why did I stop writing them?

Good question.

I've given this a bit of thought and it boils down to this---- I am uncomfortable publicly evaluating my peers on a 1-5 scale.

Let me put it this way. Imagine you are a public school teacher. How would you feel about posting an honest review of one of your fellow teachers on a site viewed by people all around the world? Even if the colleague is one you like and respect, the whole thing seems fraught with potential problems.

Will the colleague now feel obligated to write something similar for you?

What if you only give them four stars instead of five and maybe you make a tiny criticism? Will you feel a bit awkward the next time you run into them in the hallway or teachers' lounge?

Will all the other teachers expect you to do the same for them? Or worse, will someone ask you to write a nice review for them if they write one for you?

Yet, I want to be helpful and supportive too.

What should I do? I've come up with a system that I suits me. Although I don't post reviews on Amazon or similar sites, here's what I am willing (and happy) to do.

  • Authors are always welcome on my blog to promote their books. Really, just send me an email or PM on Facebook.
  • On Fridays, I host the Spanking Stories Book Club which features a discussion of a different spanking book each week.
  • When I particularly enjoy a book, I often post a review (but without stars) here on my blog. I've got a couple planned so come back and see what I have to say.
  • And, I am always willing (as time allows) to read WIPs for my colleagues and offer feedback. I'd even go so far as to say I'm pretty good at it and provide useful suggestions. Just ask.

Is this the best solution? I don't know, but it's the one I'm comfortable with right now.

Come back tomorrow for my review of Patricia Green's The Girl With The Thistle Tattoo.

And Friday we'll be talking about Dinah McLeod's Swift Justice.

Please enjoy this excerpt from my Work In Progress, tentatively titled Becoming A Proper Lady, The Diary of Miss Sarah McLean. Sarah McLean is an American girl whose father has taken her to Regency London in search of a husband. Here, she tells the story of her first meeting with Lord Amherst

For all my complaining I must admit that I enjoyed myself very much last night. Father and Mrs. White, the woman he has hired to make me into a proper bride for an English gentleman, escorted me. Mrs. White introduced me to a number of older ladies who were in attendance, including our hostess, Lady Waterford, who in turn introduced a number of eligible gentlemen to me.
Soon my dance card was full and I passed the evening fairly agreeably. Several of my dance partners were rather dull and I wondered why they bothered signing my dance card if they were going to spend the entire dance glancing about the room to see what everyone else was doing, but to my credit, I did not actually say as much to any of them.
There were one or two of my partners who are worthy of mention here. First, there was Lord Williams. He was quite handsome and a good dancer. He complimented me on my gown, which was perfectly understandable because it was utterly divine. Layers and layers of lace and satin pinched in at the waist by a corset, which I found totally unnecessary since I have a tiny waist as it is. But, Mrs. White insisted.
She insists more than I think she ought, but Father is the one she answers to and not me.
Lord Williams is very charming and I understand that his family is much to be envied and sought after, so Mrs. White seemed to relax a bit once she realized that he appeared taken with me. He even brought me a lemonade and we sat and chatted for a few minutes. Nothing of great consequence was said, but at least he did not comment on my accent, which puts him head and shoulders above most of the young men I have met here.
Which leads me to the other person whom I feel I must mention. While standing near an open window in order to get some fresh air, I happened to overhear a man, I have no reason to believe him a gentleman, maligning Americans as nothing more than the bastard sons of the devil.
Well, I could hardly allow something like that to go unchallenged. I am sure that had Father heard him he would have boxed the young upstart’s ears, but since the honor of my country was left to me to defend, I did my part.
“Pardon me, sir,” I said tapping the blowhard on the shoulder. When he turned, it was all I could do to keep my composure as he was undoubtedly the most strikingly handsome man I had ever seen in either America or England.
My breath caught in my throat as his dark eyes looked down at me and the corners of his mouth turned up in a sly smile. “How may I be of service to you, miss?” he said. His voice was so sultry, I nearly forgot my pique, but seeing the mischievous twinkle in his eye reminded me and I replied. “You forget, sir, that the Americans who are the bastard sons of the devil as you say, also bested your country in two wars.”
“We only sent hired soldiers to fight the bloody Americans. An army of real British soldiers would have done the job in half the time.”
“What a thing to say. And have you no respect for your countrymen who died at war?”
I glared up at him with all the might I could muster. Finally he laughed and said “My, you are not afraid to speak your mind, now are you? I suppose I ought not to be surprised. Americans are an untamed lot who apparently do not know how to train their women either.”
He smiled down at me and I suppose he meant to be funny, but I was in no mood for his humor and something came over me, I know not what, but I stomped on his toe. Hard. Though I am petite and my feet were only ensconced in dancing slippers, I saw him wince. Whether from pain or surprise, I know not.
Thereupon the scoundrel took me by the arm and lead me, very unceremoniously I might add, onto the terrace of the home in which the party took place. “What are you doing?” I said, trying very hard not to show my alarm. I glanced over my shoulder at the other guests but they were engaged with the dance and no one noticed us, not even the ever vigilant Mrs. White, who I later found out had spent more than her fair share of time sipping brandy instead of lemonade.
However, as I was being escorted from the home, Mrs. White was the least of my concerns.
This stranger, who had not even been polite enough to introduce himself to me, put his hand at the small of my back and guided me to a bench on the far corner of the terrace. I knew not what he intended but I did know that being there with him, alone, was highly improper. Yet the scorch from his touch just above my backside compelled me to comply without protest.
What was this spell he had cast over me?
He had not answered my question, but once we were near the bench he placed one foot upon it and then bent me over his knee.
“How dare you? Unhand me!” I hissed at him through gritted teeth. I would have preferred shouting to the rooftops but dared not draw attention to myself or my indecorous situation.
“I can see that you, my little Yankee girl, need a lesson in manners and that is precisely what I am about to give you.” And with that, the brute swatted my upturned backside.
I can only be thankful for the many layers of my gown because although shocking, the swat was not painful. Unfortunately, I said as much to the still unnamed man who had me over his knee. “You spank like an old lady. Or a British Lord. ‘Tis hard to tell the difference.”
There was a pause while I recoiled in horror at the implications of what I had just said. Perhaps I did need some lessons in keeping my mouth shut, but that was not the time to make such an admission.
The next thing I knew, there was a rustle of fabric and my skirts were flipped up over my back and even mussed my hair. I struggled against what he intended and I was particularly irate over the damage to my coiffure. Two maids had spent an inordinate amount of time arranging it to meet Mrs. White’s specifications and she would not be pleased to see me return to the dance floor with my hair out of place. As she liked to say in response to nearly every question I posed ‘It simply is not done.’
A cool breeze blew across the slit of my pantalets and inhaled sharply at the feeling of being exposed to the night air in such a manner. His hand cracked down on my barely covered backside and I gasped with the impact.
“I bet that did not feel like a spanking from an old lady,” the cocksure gentleman said.
“I do not know what you people here call a spanking, but my grandmother spanks harder than that.”
Why could I never learn my lesson?
I know that since this is my diary of events, you only have my word to go on, but I can honestly say that I am not usually so contrary. Of course, I do not often encounter men who excite my ire so profoundly, either.
Apparently I had a similar effect on the man who had me over his knee because he wrapped his arm around my waist, pulled me in close to himself so I could not move, and proceeded to lay into my backside in a manner which would have made any grandmother proud.
I lost count of the number of times the brute’s hand landed on my upturned bottom, but he seemed to strike it repeatedly. My delicate flesh warmed quickly under his assault and I cared for the sensations it created not at all. I kicked my feet in an attempt to impede his efforts, though rather than slowing him, he laughed. “You are quite the little hellion, Yankee girl.”
“Stop calling me that,” I said, my jaw clenched in anger and resolution.
"Since I do not know your real name, what choice do I have?” Although I was certain he had exerted himself thoroughly in my punishment, which continued unabated, he spoke as calmly as if he were reading the news.
I am not proud of this, and if I am asked directly to verify its accuracy, I cannot vouch for my own future honesty, but I shall tell you, Dear Diary.
While tottering across his knee, I turned my head as best I could but could not get a good enough angle to spit in his face, so instead, I worked up an impressive amount of spittle which I then projected onto his shoe with both accuracy and a fair amount of delight.
He paused in his efforts to scorch my rump, stood me up (which then caused my skirts to thankfully fall back into place over my reddened bottom) and stared down at his saliva adorned shoe.
I saw him bite his lip and for the second time in as many minutes I was forced to consider my own sanity.
I stood next to him, gasping for air because the position I had been in over his knee, and possibly my own trepidation over the consequences of my actions, made it difficult for me to fill my lungs sufficiently.
My captor’s hand rested gently on my arm and I glanced about the terrace considering the possibility of escape but before I could take action, I heard a familiar voice calling me.
“Miss McLean! There you are. I have been quite frantic in looking for you.” Mrs. White, red-faced from exertion and brandy, huffed and puffed in my direction. She took a firm hold of my arm and said,“Hurry, now. You are to dance the next with Lord Amherst. He is the prize catch of the season and you must be on your best behavior.”
I was stunned that Mrs. White would speak so in front of the oaf who had drug me onto the terrace in the first place, but when I glanced around to read his reaction to her words, he was gone.
Had I imagined the whole thing? Based upon the burn in my backside, I could only believe that it had been all too real.
However, I was relieved to be done with him and also relieved at not having to explain to Mrs. White why I was outside alone with a gentleman whose name I did not know.
As we approached the dance floor she glanced at my hair and tsk-ed in dismay. “Honestly, Sarah, how did you manage to get your hair into such a frazzle already?”
I could hardly explain to her that hanging upside down over a man’s knee made it challenging to maintain one’s hairstyle, and so I was grateful when she took her attention away from me and focused it on our hostess, Lady Waterford, who smiled at me and said “Miss McLean, please allow me to introduce Lord Amherst. He is most eager to make your acquaintance.”
I smiled and curtsied like the trained pet I had become, but when I glanced up from my lowered position, I stared straight into the smirking face of…you guessed it…Lord Spanked My Ass.

Happy 2014!

Happy 2014!

Different people are motivated in different ways. Some are motivated by money or praise. Some are motivated by fear.

One of the things that motivates me is that I hate not doing what I say I'm going to do. So I am going to publicly post a few New Year's Resolutions to motivate me and to keep me accountable.

1. I'm going to write 30,000 words per month.
2. Publish at least four books.
3. Blog at least 3 times per week.
4. Continue to be awesome.
