Spanking Stories Book Club: Devon's Discipline by Adaline Raine

Let's give a hearty Spanking Stories Book Club welcome to Renee Rose who is here to lead the discussion of Adaline Raine's Devon's Discipline..

Heeere's Renee:

I love paranormals, and personally, I think paranormals and BDSM or spanking romance are a perfect fit, since a supernatural hero automatically has extra points toward being an alpha. In Devon's Discipline, the hero is both a professor and a vampire--two checks toward alpha-dom in my book!

Following the tragic loss of her parents, Devon Dawson has turned to alcohol as a way to cope with the grief and her college grades are dropping fast. Things seem to have hit rock bottom when she is called into the office of Professor Matthews and scolded like a naughty schoolgirl. The handsome professor informs Devon that he’ll be keeping a close eye on her and warns her that if he feels it necessary, he will not hesitate to spank her soundly.

It isn’t long before Devon ends up over Professor Matthews’ knee for a hard, bare-bottom spanking. But even though he treats her like a wayward child, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. It seems sometimes as if he can read her most intimate thoughts, and there is a mysterious, supernatural power about him which she cannot ignore.

With the help of his firm hand, Devon begins to put her life back together. By the time she realizes that she is falling in love with him, she is in too deep to turn back. She craves his touch and wants him to take all that she has to offer, but when she discovers the truth about him, she wonders if he will be able to protect her from his own dark desires.

Publisher’s Note: Devon’s Discipline is an erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

1. In Devon's discipline, Devon's best friend, Lucy doesn't approve of her interest in Professor Matthews. Have you ever had a friend not like your partner/love interest?  How did it effect your friendship or your relationship with your partner?

2.  Devon has been truly struggling since her parent's death and is self-destructing through drinking/ditching classes. Did you ever go through a "rebellious" phase like that? And if so, was it initiated by an emotional wound or a normal part of growing up and separating from outside authority?

3. Several times Devon seems to act out or sass Professor Matthews just to be sure he's paying attention. I thought this was a very accurate depiction of "bratting".  While she isn't purposely trying to get spanked, and she resists the actual spankings, part of her loves the attention. Can you forgive a character for bad behavior when its clear she just needs to be taken in hand?

  1. Thanks Renee for hosting and thanks Celeste for having us!

    1. I've had friends and family not approve of a love interest but you have to follow your heart. Devon's desire spins into a full relationship and she chooses him. He's rather sweet on her as well and I love their interactions.

    2. I went through a rebel phase but I also had some very bad self-destructive habits/issues. It was all emotional and from abuse rather than a normal part of growing up. I feel if I had rebelled just against authority it would have been a more positive phase to have gone through.

    3. Devon brats almost all the time but she feels so lost without her parents. I lost the woman who raised me, my grandmother, in late 2012 and even as an adult it brought back lots of feelings of neglect. It's totally selfish but grief works in funny stages. I desperately act for attention when the mood strikes so her behavior is really a cry for help. Luckily she has Donovan to take notice and I feel her need trumped the brattiness.

I thought of a few more questions as I was pondering...

This story has a strong paranormal aspect not normally found in spanking romance. Does it make it hard to relate to the characters or easier because you are already in a non-real world type of setting? One of my fears was making Lucy, her bff werewolf, too harsh and seeming mean but she had Devon's best interest at heart. I thought about the human/were dynamic and hoped their friendship/love for each other would just show through despite Devon being human.

Thanks again! I've really enjoyed the discussion. I'll stop back throughout the day!

  2. Hi guys. I loved this book. I haven't read a lot of paranormal in spanking fiction and just enjoyed this. I think I'll start with question number 3 as it's the most interesting. I found myself more than once thinking 'If I were there, I'd have smacked her ass already!' while reading this and I wanted to shake Devon multiple times, but I could also understand why she was breathing and how she almost couldn't help herself.

On number 2 - are you kidding? Of course! I have two sisters and I'm the middle child and we progressively got worse! My parents weren't even bad parents, it's like a rite of passage...

I can say I've not liked a love interest of a friend of mine and for a while, it was really difficult on our friendship. Actually, until she broke up with him (or he with her, can't remember), this didn't really improve.

Thanks for the book club ladies!! This was a fun book!!

    1. I know...she really deserved more spankings but it was all for the attention like she had forgotten what it was like to have someone looking out for her.

      Totally rite of passage....

      Glad you enjoyed it!

  3. Thanks for some great questions Renee! Haven't read this book many books and only two eyes...but I'm intrigued.

    1. I was in a serious relationship with a man that my parents and friends didn't like. Admittedly, they were correct, but because some of them had been so self-righteous about it, I stayed in the relationship a year or more longer than I wanted to just to try to make it work to make them wrong. Not sure what that says about me other than I'm glad I finally dumped him.

    2. I think I'm having my rebellious stage now.

    3. I think it depends on how bad the behavior is. If it's bratting and teasing, that's one thing, but when it crosses over to just plain foolish, it's a bit more difficult for me. I think that's one of the major challenges of writing spanking/domestic discipline, finding an infraction that is deserving of punishment but not something that it so bad the heroine is unlikeable.

    1. What's your rebellious stage like? LOL

Her behavior, at least what went through my head, was as a result to see if Donovan really meant what he said and cared. It's obvious to Lucy, her bff, that she's falling but she doesn't see it until close to the end of the story. Poor Devon just had a lot of crap roll down on her...

  4. I haven't read the book yet either, but I can't wait!!! First of all I love paranormal and spanking mixed. They are my two favorite genres, so of course I love them together. I think it allows a certain dynamic that just won't fly in other genres.

    1. In my life if my family doesn't like who I'm dating (I've been married for 15 years so this mostly applies to my teenage years) the relationship doesn't fly no matter what I am hoping for. They tend to have a radar and have been right 100% of the time. Same for friends...much to my chagrin. However, this is not true for many people. Not everyone, no matter how well meaning, knows what is best for their loved ones.

    2. I definitely had a rebellious stage. Mine was in part my insatiable need to try everything...a never ending curiosity.

    3. I think there is a fine line in this area as far as fictional characters go. I can take bratting...especially when there is an underlying reason for it. It really helps when the authors create a well developed character that shows her vulnerability as well. We need something we can root for. Shallow, one dimensional, characters are a lot harder to root for.

I was really excited that Devon's Discipline was this week's book club pick. I can't wait to see what others thought!

    1. 1. I know! It's awful but I always have to step back and let my loved ones, usually my sisters but it goes for friends too, make a choice and just sit by until they come around. Then we drink and hug and cry. I wish my advice was followed but in the end I can only support.

      3. Devon brats.....and brats....and brats... LOL

  5. I guess I should answer my own questions!
1). I have had both where a friend didn't like a guy I was dating and told me at the time (and it put a serious strain on our relationship) and I've also had where my friends kept their mouths shut until I was thinking about breaking up and suddenly I found out they all hated him. Neither one feels good, I have to say...

    2. I've never been much of a rebel. My senior year of college I guess I smoked too much pot and didn't eat enough food, but that's about it.

    3. Like Natasha, I sometimes wanted to spank Devon myself, but I did understand perfectly where it was coming from. Still, I was always glad when she got spanked. ;P

I love getting feedback. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
