Spanking Stories Book Club---The Devil Of Whiskey Row

In The Devil of Whiskey Row, Jake "Daddy Diggs" Diggory is the owner of a brothel. He doesn't have sex with any of his "girls", but he does spank them when he believes they need to be disciplined.

This raises an issue that I've noticed in several books, many by Renee Rose so maybe she can weigh in on this too: a male hero who disciplines multiple women with spanking but once he develops a relationship with the heroine, she wants him to only spank her. That happens in this book and also in Pleasing The Colonel and some others (I think Courting Celia?).
My point: spanking starts out as discipline and something the heroine does not want, yet over time she views it differently and wants the hero to only spank her and not other women.

What is this change? Does spanking go from just punishment to something intimate? A sign of affection or care?

Am I the only one who thinks this is noteworthy?

                                What do you think?

Here's an issue that's only in this book, but was brought up in last week's discussion. What do you think about Jake "allowing" Cora to continue to service customers after they have been together?

I know I haven't been around for a few Friday discussions, but I'm here today so let's talk!

  1. In my experience, at first, a spanking is pain/punishment. But, eventually, it becomes a sign of caring and affection. I know that is the way I feel and I have heard many bottoms express the same emotion. I like the way Renee's character progressed from taking the punishment reluctantly to wanting to feel the love from Jake.

    1. It seems like the hero also changes his views from punishment to something more, too.

    2. I think it does become a sign of caring and affection--very true, Joey!

  2. Initially spanking is a punishment but once the couple becomes intimate spanking takes on a different meaning. I think some women would feel like it would be cheating. However, wouldn't it depend on circumstances, i.e, over clothing, no bare bottom, and definitely no cuddling afterward.

    1. Good point about the circumstances and the cuddling. Those would be the things that make it more intimate, I think.

  4. I think for Jake and Cora the spanking definitely goes to a more intimate place and that's why Cora doesn't want him spanking anyone else. Kind of like, he is showing how much he cares about her by spanking her and she doesn't want him sharing that with the other girls.
As for Jake "allowing" Cora to service customers after they had been together. Jake's just all confused at first, he's afraid he took advantage of her, and afraid he hurt her. I think he was just seriously confused about his feelings and he didn't feel like he could tell her not to take customers anymore. I like that Cora always had a choice, even when she first got there he told her that she could just clean and she didn't have to take customers. I think that's what made the whole situation okay for me.

    1. Hi Casey! Thanks for stopping by!

You make a good point about Jake being all confused. Much more realistic for him to waver back and forth a bit.

I also liked the fact that Cora always had a choice. I think that was very important for this story.

    2. I'm with you Casey. At least as far as I'm concerned. Very intimate for me....Cora servicing other customers is really hot

  5. Spanking doesn't have to be intimate, but if the partners connect on a deeper level, it most definitely *is* intimate. Cora doesn't want Jake to be intimate with other women. That goes both ways in the long-run.
